Renaissance Press Photogravure

2023 Copper Plate Photogravure Workshop

Copper Plate Photogravure Workshops 2023

June  23, 24, 25, 26, & 27   (three available)     &.    August  7, 8, 9, 10, & 11   (two available)

The abundance of variables possible with copper plate photogravure plate making and printing is limited only by the artist’s imagination.

This summer Renaissance Press is hosting two intensive copper plate photogravure workshops.  The workshops take place at Renaissance Press in Ashuelot, New Hampshire. Participants should expect intensive days in a relaxed environment. Renaissance Press is located on the bank of the Ashuelot River and is a 25-minute drive to Keene, New Hampshire or Brattleboro, Vermont.  Lodging at the farmhouse at Renaissance Press will be available to participants during the workshop.

Workshop participants will work with either dust grain aquatint or aquatint screen plate making methods.  I will discuss and demonstrate digital file preparation, film & process linearization, aquatint dust grain platemaking, aquatint screen platemaking, single bath etching, and modified single bath etching, steel plating, and printing.  I will discuss several ways to vary and work with each step of the process.  This will make it easier for participants to choose methods that will work best in their studio.  Printing topics and demonstrations will include press setup, inks, modifiers, papers, natural gravure proofs, chine collé, oil rolls, a la poupée, print waxing and print varnishing.  The last day of the workshop is an optional studio day.  Participants are free to use the facilities to make plates and prints.

The skills learned from the digital film discussions and tutorials will enable workshop attendees to return to their studios and make digital film for any contact print based photographic process.

The workshops are taught by Paul Taylor, Director of Renaissance Press. Taylor’s work with photography and printmaking spans over thirty years of intensive research, artmaking, innovation, teaching, and collaborations with artists. Taylor has taught in both the printmaking and photography departments at The Rhode Island School of Design.   Renaissance Press has had over 20 national and international solo shows. Renaissance Press prints are in numerous national and international museum, corporate and private collections.
